Australia's Electric Vehicle Market Share Hits Record High in March

Sydney, April 7 (Reporter Bo Wenwen) – Data released by the Commonwealth Automobile Industry of Australia (FCAI) on the 7th showed that electric vehicle sales saw a significant increase in March, with market share reaching a record high for a single month.

The data showed that 15,839 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were sold in Australia in March, accounting for 14.6% of total car sales that month, significantly higher than the 7.5% in March 2025.

Total car sales in Australia in March were 105,058 units, a year-on-year decrease of 3.3%. In terms of brands, Toyota ranked first with 16,574 units sold, followed by Kia, BYD, Mazda, and Ford.

FCAI CEO Tony Weber said that the March data reflects strong growth in demand for electric vehicles, but it is too early to judge whether this indicates a structural shift in the market. He pointed out that this growth may be driven by short-term factors, including the impact of Middle East conflicts on fuel supply and the Australian government's review of the Electric Vehicle Benefit Tax (FBT) incentive policy, noting that "more and more consumers are considering buying electric vehicles."

Weber said the Australian automotive industry has invested heavily in introducing over 100 electric vehicles to the local market and is committed to achieving the emissions reduction targets set by the New Vehicle Energy Efficiency Standard (NVES), therefore welcoming the continued transition to electric vehicles.

He also stated that in the long term, the Australian government still needs to increase investment in public charging infrastructure, especially in remote areas and scenarios where home charging is not available. "Ensuring that infrastructure keeps pace with consumer demand is crucial for driving the sustainable development of electric vehicle adoption and transcending the impact of short-term factors."
