On March 19, Uber and electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian announced that, as part of a partnership agreement for autonomous taxis, Uber will invest up to $1.25 billion in Rivian. Under the agreement, Uber will deploy 10,000 fully autonomous Rivian R2 SUVs to serve as robotaxis, beginning in 2028.
The two companies stated that Uber will make an initial investment of $300 million, with the remaining funds to be injected in tranches through 2031, provided that Rivian meets specific milestone targets regarding its autonomous driving technology.
